Course Overview
This course presents an introduction to the creatively ambiguous topic of stress in organizations. The dual focus in the course is on, first, understanding the stress process and its effects, and, second, preventively managing stress and demands. Self-assessment activities and preventive stress management interventions are presented. Preventive stress management skills are essential for all business executives.



Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, the course participant should be able to:

  • Identify four major work demand categories and major personal demands.
  • Specify the mind-body changes of the stress response and the major individual difference modifiers of the stress response.
  • Recognize behavioral, psychological, and medical distress for individuals and the direct and indirect costs of distress for organizations.
  • Identify organizational prevention interventions aimed at healthy stress management in work environments.
  • Define primary preventive stress management methods for individuals.
  • Define secondary preventive stress management methods for individuals and the treatment interventions available for individuals in distress.

    Debra L. Nelson
    Debra L. Nelson is The CBA Associates Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Oklahoma State University. She received her PhD from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was the recipient of the R.D. Irwin Dissertation Fellowship Award. Her research interests include organizational stress management, newcomer socialization, and management of technology. Dr. Nelson's research has been published in the Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, MIS Quarterly, Organizational Dynamics, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and other journals. In addition, she is coauthor of several books, including Stress and Challenge at the Top: The Paradox of the Successful Executive, Organizational Behavior: Foundations, Realities, and Challenges, and Preventive Stress Management in Organizations. Dr. Nelson has served as consultant to several organizations including AT&T, State Farm Insurance Companies, and Southwestern Bell. She has received numerous awards, including the Regents' Distinguished Teaching Award, the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award, and the Chandler-Frates and Reitz Graduate Teaching Award. Dr. Nelson also serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and the Journal of Organizational Behavior.

    James Campbell Quick
    Joseph Campbell Quick is Professor of Organizational Behavior at The University of Texas at Arlington, Editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and Associate Editor of The Academy of Management Executive. He earned his undergraduate degree with Honors at Colgate University and his PhD from the University of Houston. He received the 1990 Distinguished Professional Publication Award for "Corporate Warfare: Preventing Combat Stress and Battle Fatigue," co-authored with Debra L. Nelson and his brother Jonathan for the American Management Association's Organizational Dynamics. He is co-author of Preventive Stress Management in Organizations and Stress and Challenge at the Top: The Paradox of the Successful Executive. He is co-editor of The New Organizational Reality: Downsizing, Restructuring, and Revitalization and Stress and Well-Being at Work. Dr. Quick was recognized with the Texas Volunteer Recognition Award (American Heart Association), a listing in the 7th edition of Who's Who in the World (1984-85), and The Maroon Citation (Colgate University Alumni Corporation). Dr. Quick is also a colonel in the US Air Force Reserve.
